Entrepreneurship as survival?

“Nobody talks of entrepreneurship as survival, but that’s exactly what it is and what nurtures creative thinking.” – Anita Roddick

Just personally though, the question is always “collective or individual survival”. Now, I may have been corruptedby a hopelessly non-conformist/public-service-oriented upbringing, but my answer is always “collective”. So, what impassions me is creative thinking that is oriented on the survival of the collective: workforce, class, village or other community.

I think this raises some really interesting questions. Can we start with social/collective survival or do we need to start with self-interest first?

From a thorough understanding of self interest arises a genuine desire for collective/social action. de Tocqueville wrote about ‘self interest rightly understood’. http://xroads.virginia.edu/~HYPER/DETOC/ch2_08.htm
